PHILADELPHIA, April 28, 2009 – State Sen. Anthony H. Williams released the following statement regarding Sen. Arlen Specter’s decision to run as a Democrat when he seeks reelection in 2010.

“As a Philadelphian and a person of color, I have watched Arlen Specter’s career closely since his days as a district attorney. He has values that eclipse both political parties and he always votes from the perspective of what he thinks is right and correct first. I appreciate his independent spirit in a particular way because of his relationship with my father.”

Williams’ father, former state Sen. Hardy Williams, was the father of the Black independent political movement in Philadelphia and often broke party and racial lines, including a controversial endorsement of Specter during his first run for Senate in 1980.

The current Sen. Williams looks forward to campaigning for Specter during the upcoming election season.
