PHILADELPHIA, Aug. 28, 2014 — State Sen. Anthony Hardy Williams, local officials and more vendors have signed up to make the senator’s “Ultimate Back 2 School Basketball Challenge” a huge success when the tournament tips off at 10 a.m., Saturday, Aug. 30, at the Kingsessing Recreation Center, Philadelphia.

Although the hoops tournament will crown a winner at 3:30 p.m., Sen. Williams’ event is happening to collect much-needed school supplies for area students.

All attendees and players have been asked to donate a notebook, backpack, pencils or other school supplies. The winning basketball team will then donate all of the collected school supplies from the tournament to their selected school.

Approximately 20 vendors will be offering food and resource information. Shirtcitizens is donating all of the team t-shirts. The first 50 students will also receive a coupon for a free hair cut from “Barbers Who Care” (17 … Days of Fashion, Kenny Duncan, Andis & Villa). Villa’s coupon is for haircuts between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m.,  Aug. 31, at its 4 S. 52nd St. location.

The basketball challenge is in collaboration with The Philly Commission and locally elected officials. Evelyn Sample-Oates, deputy chief of family and community engagement, will attend to represent the School District of Philadelphia, along with all invited principals and leadership of participating schools.
