Chilling Events Involving Children, Accidental Deaths Involving Guns Prompt Action

Harrisburg – December 11, 2017 − State Sen. Anthony H. Williams (D-Philadelphia/Delaware) in partnership with Sheriff Jewel Williams and Inspector Derrick Woods of the Southwest Police Division will be hosting a gunlock give-a-way in Philadelphia on Saturday, Dec. 16 at 10 a.m.   The location for the safety lock give-a-way will be at 12th Police District, 6448 Woodland Ave.

Williams’ gunlock give-a-way is being held in concert with a citywide gunlock distribution effort undertaken by the Philadelphia Sheriff’s office.   This is an ongoing initiative to prevent children from being wounded and/or killed in accidental shootings involving unsecured firearms.  The recent shooting involving a three-year old from West Philadelphia with an unlocked gun has focused heightened attention on prevention activities.

The U.S. General Accounting Office has estimated that nearly one-third of accidental firearms deaths could be prevented if gun locks or load indicators were used.
