DARBY, Dec. 3, 2012 — Just days before folks around the country settled around tables to enjoy their Thanksgiving meals, state Sen. Anthony H. Williams and his team secured and delivered 100 turkeys and 75 meal baskets to constituents and charitable organizations across the 8th Senatorial District to ensure that families in need could enjoy the holiday.
On Monday, Nov. 19 and Tuesday, Nov. 20, Williams handed out nearly 200 turkeys, as well as bags of dry goods, fresh produce and meal baskets to scores of constituents and community organizations, and Williams’ staff delivered pies to every police and fire station in the district to recognize them for their dedication to our communities.
The goods were donated by Fresh Grocers, ShopRite and the Food Trust.
The effort is the first of the senator’s seasonal events, geared toward aiding and celebrating families in need throughout the district.
“Thanksgiving is not just a holiday, but an American tradition of togetherness and generosity,” said Williams (D-Phila./Delaware). “It’s important that as many people as possible are able to enjoy Thanksgiving with a hot meal, because it represents so much more than just food. It evokes a spirit of peace and community that benefits us all.
“I’m so grateful to Fresh Grocers, ShopRite, the Food Trust and all our volunteers for their generous and nutritious donations and time. It’s a wonderful way to kick of this holiday season of giving,” he added.
