Philadelphia, PA, October 11, 2010 —- The Pennsylvania State Senate Education Committee will conduct a public hearing on Senate Bill 1405, the Opportunity Scholarship Bill, sponsored by PA State Senator Anthony Hardy Williams (Dem 8th) on Wednesday in Harrisburg. SB-1405 provides scholarships for low-income students that attend schools in a district with at least one failing school which they can use to attend a school of their choice. The hearing which will be held in Hearing Room 1 of the North Office Building will begin at 9:30 a.m. Students, parents, school administrators, school choice advocates and public interest groups are scheduled to testify.“ We look forward to an open and full hearing on this important issue,” said Williams. SB-1405 has received broad based support. Both Pennsylvania Gubernatorial candidates Democrat Dan Onorato and Republican Tom Corbett have pledged their support of the bill and recently the IBEW Local 98 and the Laborers’ District Council of the Metropolitan Area of Philadelphia and Vicinity announced their support.
