New Champion Crowned in Hoops Tourney

PHILADELPHIA, Aug. 27, 2015 — More than 500 people turned out at the Kingsessing Recreation Center recently for a spirited basketball tournament that benefitted local school students, and Sen. Anthony Hardy Williams’ “2015 Ultimate Back 2 School Basketball Tournament” crowned a new champion.

State Rep. Jordan Harris’ Alcorn School tipped off against the host’s Comegys School – the defending champion – but it was the Alcorn School that walked away the winner of Sen. Williams’ annual event.

The “Ultimate Back 2 School Basketball Tournament” is now an annual event that is growing in popularity.

Alcorn team members got to donate to their school all of the notebooks, backpacks, pencils and other school supplies attendees and participants donated. More than anything, that’s what Sen. Williams said the event was about.

“We’ve come together for one purpose, and that is to support our children for this upcoming school year,” Williams said at the start of the Aug. 22 tournament. “Making sure they have the necessary supplies to start off on the right note.

“None of this would be possible without every single one of you. I am thankful and proud to serve as your state senator for the 8th Senatorial District.”

The Foundation for a Better Society and JB With Open Arms joined Sen. Williams in presenting the tournament.

In addition to Comegys and Alcorn teams, these other squads and sponsors helped to make the 2015 edition of the event one to remember:

Childs School – Councilman Kenyatta Johnson

Harrington School – Rep. James Roebuck

King High School – Kings Rule Together

Lea School – Councilwoman Jannie Blackwell

MCS Charter School – Nehemiah Davis Foundation

Morton McMichael School – Councilwoman Blondell Reynolds-Brown

Penn Wood Middle School – Don Cave / Barber Money Team

Penrose School – 12th Philadelphia Police District

Rashon Burbage, 14, was named MVP of the tournament. He starred for Rep. Harris’ championship team.

Besides basketball, everyone who attended the basketball tournament had the opportunity to receive free health screenings by Keystone, enjoy refreshments by Alisha Jackson, The Beautification Project and Sen. Williams’ office, and be entertained with music by DJ RudeBoi. Moonbounces and other fun activities were available for children.
