WHAT: Public hearing on Parent Accountability Act (Senate Bill 99)

DETAILS: The Senate Judiciary Committee public hearing will address Sen. Williams’ Parent Accountability legislation (Senate Bill 99). If passed, Senate Bill 99 would hold parents and guardians legally liable for the unlawful acts of their minor children. It also seeks to institute a formal, voluntary diversionary training program that encourages and teaches parents and guardians how to play a proactive and positive role in the lives of their children.

The committee will hear from state Rep. William Keller (D-Philadelphia); Philadelphia Police Commissioner Charles Ramsey; Philadelphia District Attorney Seth Williams; School District of Philadelphia Superintendent Dr. Arlene Ackerman; Harvey Rice, 1st Safe School Advocate for the School District of Philadelphia; Dr. Deborah Vereen, president of Parent Accountability Initiative in Public Education; Dr. Charles Williams, assistant clinical professor at Drexel University and director of the Center for Prevention of School-Aged Violence; and Shelly Yanoff, executive director for Public Citizens for Children & Youth.
