Black Caucus Symposium
I was honored to take part in the Delaware County Black Caucus (DCBC) Inaugural Symposium at Cheyney University in October. The Symposium attracted approximately 200 attendees from across Delaware County. We heard from several speakers, including a panel of Cheyney University students, on the importance of engaging in the democratic processFormed in June 2018, DCBC is a nonprofit organization focused on addressing issues that impact residents of African descent in Delaware County. I am proud to be part of this grassroots organization dedicated to advocating on behalf of the black community in Delaware County. If we can maintain the passion and enthusiasm I witnessed at the Symposium, I am certain that we will accomplish a great deal as we move forward.
Stop & Go Tour
I organized a tour of “Stop and Go” establishments in October to highlight how these nuisance bars continue to ignore licensing requirements despite efforts in Harrisburg to strengthen the laws that govern these businesses. I toured several places with elected officials, community leaders, and Liquor Control Board officials.
These businesses have long plagued local communities throughout the 8th Senatorial District and Philadelphia. I hear regular complaints from residents regarding illegal activities in the areas surrounding “Stop and Go” establishments. Ultimately, lawmakers in Harrisburg can only do so much without the cooperation of local authorities responsible for enforcing the law.
I will continue seeking increased cooperation with the Liquor Control Board as we work together to better regulate these places, but we need your help in this. Be sure to report any violations you see so that the police can do their part in building a record against those who refuse to follow the law. We can make our communities safer if we all do our part.
Thanksgiving is around the corner!
Though many of us will gather with friends and family to enjoy Thanksgiving dinner and watch football, it is important to reflect on what we are thankful for and remember those who may not be as fortunate. The holiday season provides us with a unique opportunity to give back and provide a lasting memory for those who are struggling. I hope that all of us spend a few moments in the service of others this holiday season.
Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours.
