PHILADELPHIA, April 7, 2016 – State Sen. Anthony Hardy Williams said he is applauding Gov. Tom Wolf’s decision today to announce that he is taking special steps to protect members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered community who are employed by the commonwealth or work for contractors being paid by state government.

“Governor Wolf’s action today is a step in the right direction,” Williams said. “No one should be threatened with losing their home or livelihood, or be refused service because of who they love.

“What needs to happen next is for the General Assembly to follow the governor’s timely lead and pass overdue bipartisan legislation designed to protect every Pennsylvania citizen from this kind of discrimination.

“Just last year, hundreds of people visited Independence Hall to mark the 50th anniversary of the start of the LGBT civil rights movement. In this 51st year, people of every sexual orientation should be able to celebrate the success of that fight and finally live without fear of discrimination.

“That will happen when state lawmakers get legislation to the governor’s desk.”
